Faucaria
M.H.G. Schwantes en 1926

Etymology: It comes from the Latin fauces, which means mouths.
Place of Origin: South Africa, especially the Eastern Cape Region.

Despite its aggressive appearance, which resembles crocodile mouths—in some species even with "teeth"—the plant is completely harmless. It consists of fleshy leaves in shades ranging from light green to brown. It forms compact rosettes and blooms mainly in autumn, with striking yellow flowers that open in the sun. It requires good lighting and is very sensitive to waterlogging, so it needs well-drained soil and moderate watering.

The entire plant resembles tiny mouths, with some species even appearing toothed, though their "teeth" are completely harmless. It typically does not exceed 10 cm in height and forms more or less extensive clusters. It blooms in autumn and winter. The flowers open during the central hours of the day, particularly when exposed to direct sunlight. This plant is easy to cultivate, though somewhat susceptible to rot. It thrives in well-drained soil and propagates extremely easily from cuttings. It prefers full sun and high temperatures but can tolerate light frosts. It is advisable to keep it dry outside its growth period. The most recently accepted classification for this genus is the one proposed by Groen and Van der Maesen (1999), which represents a significant simplification and reduction in the number of species.
